Foodie Hotspot: Oranjezicht City Farm

If you like farmers markets, and you love breakfast, Oranjezicht City Farm in Cape Town will send you to seventh heaven.

Held every Saturday in the Granger Bay site of the V&A waterfront, the OZCF market was designed to bring together the community and give local farmers and artisan producers somewhere to sell their specialities.

Walking into the market from the main road you don't get much of a sense of what you're about to experience so I spend the first few minutes having a total sensory overload. There's so much to see and do and importantly, eat. The market is split into four main sections; when you first enter there's a craft market followed by a fresh produce section and then my favourite part, the food stalls with an outdoor eating area.

Pretty much everything is sourced locally and they cater for everyone. We saw loads of options for vegans, vegetarians, those with allergies and those who want to seriously indulge. We came into the latter category.

We arrived at about 9am ravenous for some breakfast and the market was already getting pretty busy. After doing a quick lap around the all the market stalls  while allocating precious stomach space to all my favourite things we prepared to dig in.

First we started with shakshuka, one of my all time favourite breakfasts. Hot and healthy I think I'd happily start every day with a plate of spicy plate of eggs. These were some of the best I've ever had served with a hot, fluffy pitta bread fresh from the over. Heaven.

Next on the menu was a savoury crepe. This stand seemed to always have a long queue (with good reason) so one of our friends headed straight into the line as soon as we arrived to get us one with ham, cheese, tomato and an egg. I honestly don't think i've had one like this before but i'll definitely be having one again.

And because no meal is finished without a bit of desert we finished off with some strawberry and pecan waffles and custard tarts. I can honestly say that these were without a doubt the best Portuguese custard tarts i've ever had (dare I say it even better than when we were in Portugal).

If you're in Cape Town on a Saturday i'd say that this simply must be on your to-do list. Full of exciting things to eat and drink all while enjoying some community spirit and supporting local businesses.

The Oranjezicht City Farm is located at the historic Granger Bay site of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.
