Nice To Meater, to Meater Nice!

The Only Meat Thermometer You’ll Ever Need!

I am quite new to gadgets in the kitchen, but recently I fell in love with a piece of kitchen tech that I’m so excited to tell you about.  It’s one of those things that made me want to kick myself for not getting sooner because it has given me a new level of confidence I certainly didn’t have before.

My new toy is The Meater Plus. I know you’re probably asking yourself ‘what is a Meater?’ well let me tell you a bit more about it.  A Meater is a state of the art thermometer that links to your phone and removes all of the guesswork from cooking meat and fish.

I am pretty confident in the kitchen, but there are three scenarios that really stress me out and they involve under and overcooking. My three biggest kitchen fears are:

  • Overcooking the turkey on Christmas Day - Imagine ruining Christmas!

  • Overcooking a beautiful steak, or to be honest any piece of beef - I can’t bear the thought of wasting all that money and amazing beef!

  • Undercooking chicken and giving everyone food poisoning - I’ve had food poising once and I can assure you I NEVER want it again!

All of these fears are now gone because I can rely on my trusty Meater to hold my hand along the way. You simply insert the Meater into your meat or fish (there are handy videos to show you the best part of the meat to insert it to), set up a ‘cook’ on the app and after a short while the app will give you an estimated cooking time. The dial sensors measure the internal temperature alongside the ambient cooking temperatures so you get a super accurate reading at all times. The advanced estimator algorithm estimates how long to cook and rest your food to help plan your meal and manage your time. Just so clever.

Inside the app where you set up your ‘cook’ as they call it, you can pick from a selection of meats, and fish and it then lets you choose from a list of cuts and then asks you how you’d like it cooked - so it knows the exact internal temperature you’re aiming for. So far I’ve tested it out on a tomahawk steak which I cooked on the BBQ, a large sharing piece of sirloin steak, two chickens and a side of salmon. I like my salmon just cooked and my word it was PERFECT. It was great to have the confidence to know I wasn’t cremating the tomahawk on the BBQ, and I was surprised the chickens were done earlier than I was expecting.

Features of the Meater Plus include:

  • Built-in Bluetooth

  • Wireless range up to 50m.

  • 100% Wire-Free so no fuss

  • 2 Sensors, 1 Probe: Dual temperature sensors can monitor internal meat temperature and ambient.

  • Connectivity Suite: Monitor your cook from a phone or tablet over Bluetooth. Extend your wireless range using MEATER Link WiFi and the MEATER Cloud.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about cooking a joint of beef is that you want to cook it for at least 10 minutes less than the packet suggests if you want it rare! If you like your beef well done, we’ll I’m not sure we can be friends!

I like my steak rare, and it can be so easy to overcook a steak when you can’t see what’s going on on the inside! A high-quality piece of beef is one of our favourite treats, and instead of going out for dinner or ordering in a takeaway, we often get a juicy cote de boeuf. You can pick up one from Ocado or Waitrose and they range from between £15-£25 which I appreciate is expensive but they can feed up to four if you get a big one and compared to the price of a takeaway I think you’re getting good value. Waitrose also does a Tomahawk for about £15 which is the best price I’ve seen for one but they aren’t huge.  I’d recommend speaking to your butcher if you can if you want to go one up and try a tomahawk which is where they leave the bone in and it’s a real showstopper. Our local London butcher does one for £25 which feeds 3/4 people. It’s worth remembering with a big piece of meat that if the middle is rare then the other pieces will be more cooked so there’s usually something for everyone when you’re carving up. If you don’t have a butcher near you, check out Meat Box who deliver fresh meat nationwide, And if you really want to try the best of the best, Fine food Specialists have an incredible selection of superb quality British Beef.
